Charity Of The Year '09

The Pasque Charity is Announced as Airport Charity of the Year 2009

London Luton Airport has announced it will be supporting The Pasque Charity as its chosen Charity of the Year for 2009. The campaign was launched with an initial donation of £10,000, handed over during a festive evening at The Pasque where representatives from the Airport helped to put up Christmas decorations at the Children’s Hospice.

The Airport’s Charity Committee aims to multiply the initial donation, working closely with fundraisers from the Charity, to involve staff and passengers alike in a myriad of entertaining fundraising activity across the Airport site.

The Pasque Charity provides specialist palliative care for adults and children with life-limiting conditions and the multi-professional approach offered by The Pasque Charity involves medical, nursing, social, spiritual and emotional care and is provided 24 hours-a-day, every day of the year. The Pasque Charity operates two hospice services – The Pasque Adult Hospice and Keech Cottage Children’s Hospice, which are both located together within beautiful countryside just north of Luton.

Simon Earles, London Luton Airport’s General Manager: Planning & Corporate Social Responsibility said “The Pasque Charity is an organisation close to many Airport employees’ hearts and it is a great pleasure to be able to make a contribution to the amazing work that the organisation undertakes. We sincerely hope to add significantly to our initial donation through fundraising activities with employees and passengers throughout the year to make a real difference to this outstanding charity.’

Chief Executive of The Pasque Charity, David White, said: “We are delighted that London Luton Airport have chosen the Pasque to be Charity of the Year in 2009. This is a very exciting opportunity for our organisation and will mean a great deal to our adult and children’s hospices in the future. We are already working closely with Airport staff to explore ways in which we can offer our support for the adoption.”

East Anglian Air Ambulance

Charity Of The Year '08

LONDON LUTON AIRPORT PLEDGES YEAR OF SUPPORT

London Luton Airport has announced it will be supporting the East Anglian Air Ambulance as its chosen charity for 2008. The campaign will be launched with an initial donation of £10,000 which the Airport's Charity Committee hopes to multiply by developing further fundraising opportunities involving its employees, business partners and passengers.

The air ambulances operated by the East Anglian Air Ambulance provide cover 365 days a year across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk; an area covering approximately 11% of the total area of England.

The East Anglian region, considered the most rural area in England with accidents sometimes occurring in remote locations not easily accessible by road, needs the air ambulance service more than ever. With the region also featuring major road networks such as the A14 and sections of the A1 and M1 it's not surprising that attending road traffic accidents already makes up more than 50% of its work.

When treating victims of trauma or medical emergencies, the chance of them making a full recovery is greatly increased if they receive definitive medical care within the first hour, known as the 'Golden Hour'. Equipped with the latest medical equipment and with a top speed of 155 miles per hour, the air ambulance can reach the scene of emergencies quickly, enabling its life saving crew to attend to patients and stabilise them ready for transport to hospital by land - or by air if necessary.

The East Anglian Air Ambulance is the third busiest air ambulance charity in the UK, flying an average of 3 missions per day. Simon Earles, London Luton Airport's General Manager: Planning & Corporate Social Responsibility said "The air ambulance provides a vital emergency service for our region so we are delighted to assist with the fundraising effort and, through our Charity Committee, raise awareness to get the whole Airport involved".

Simon Gray, Executive Director of the East Anglian Air Ambulance, commented: "This is a fantastic offer of support from London Luton Airport and we are absolutely delighted that the Charity Committee has decided to support our work this year. We look forward to working with them closely during 2008.

Together, we'll make a real difference to the outcomes of some of those in our region unfortunate enough to suffer an accident or medical emergency this year."

Airport is Fit For Business

London Luton Airport is officially “Fit For Business!”

2nd September 2009

Over the last year London Luton Airport has been encouraging employees to get ‘Fit for Business’ as one of the participants on the Big Lottery Funded ‘Wellbeing in The East’ Fit for Business Portfolio.

The airport signed up to the ‘Fit For Business’ (FFB) national recognition programme for workplace health and wellbeing, working to support employee health and wellbeing across 5 key remits: Physical Activity, Healthy Eating options, Mental Health & Wellbeing promotion, Smoking Cessation Information and Drugs and Alcohol Awareness.

The airport recently reached ‘Fit for Business Recognition’ and has officially been branded a Fit for Business certified workplace.

FFB and LLA have worked together to nominate a team of ‘Workplace Champions’. It is the responsibility of the ‘Champions’ to lead and deliver the FFB programme within the workplace. FFB then works with these Champions to offer tailored one-to-one support, training days, a dedicated support helpline and offers an online toolkit of resources at the Champions’ disposal.

Armed with the support of the FFB team, over the last year the Champions have been able to instigate a whole host of employee interventions to improve staff wellbeing and lifestyle choices at work.

Highlights of the project which has successfully taken LLA to ‘Fit For Business Recognition’ are;

  • A road-show style event across the airport taking employees’ blood pressure. The launch was attended by numerous staff and FFB provided blood pressure checks for 128 staff.
  • 30 day Gym Membership for £1, Dance Mat sessions and Table Tennis offered on site and the kick start of the Tax Free Bike Scheme with Sustrans.
  • Healthy Eating events and other activities to encourage staff to maintain a healthy balanced diet despite varying shift patterns, including the introduction of an ‘Eat Well’ promotion, linking with Prêt a Manger to offer all Airport employees one FREE piece of fruit per person, per day for 6 weeks.

Simon Earles, General Manager, CSR and Planning commented ‘Through the FFB scheme employees are getting a real feel for ‘Moving More and Eating Well’, which has great long term benefits for individuals and the Airport as a whole.’

Festival of Flight 2009

16th July 2009

Community celebrates success of Festival of Flight project.

Children from local schools, Councillors and Airport management all met last week to celebrate the culmination of the Festival of Flight project, a joint initiative between London Luton Airport and Luton Borough Council’s Community Development Service.
Festival of Flight is an innovative national project developed by UK based charity Heartstone. First trialled in 2002, it uses stories and images of flight to engage with young people by examining national, racial, cultural and other boundaries, as well as key citizenship issues (past and present), with the aim of raising aspirations and sensitively challenge stereotypical perceptions.

The Luton Festival of Flight project, which launched in May 2008, saw two youth ambassadors chosen to participate in a once in a lifetime opportunity to fly in a light aircraft and then use these exciting flight experiences to inspire young people at a selection of schools workshops in Luton. The project has been recognised as a fantastic example of successful partnership work by London Luton Airport and Luton Borough Council’s Community Development Service.

During the evening the chosen youth ambassadors recounted their experiences and the project team presented on the work completed by the ambassadors and the schools they visited. Glyn Jones Managing Director, London Luton Airport and Councillors Bailey, Malik, Khan, and Riaz, Major of Luton, were in attendance as well as pupils from Denbigh, Sacred Heart and Leagrave Primary Schools. Artwork created by the schools was on display and prizes were given to the participating children.

Glyn Jones, Managing Director, London Luton Airport, commented;
' With the aviation theme there was a clear fit for the Festival of Flight with the Airport and we are delighted that the local participating schools have grasped the project with such vigor, speaking with some of the pupils this evening it is clear that the project and the ambassadors have truly provided inspiration.'

The Mayor of Luton, Cllr Mohammed Riaz added: “This is such an innovative concept and I can ensure you that it wasn’t just the children that were inspired. Hearing experiences like this first hand is an excellent way of raising the aspirations of all young people, irrespective of their race, culture, gender, wealth or religion.”

Art Gallery Launch

9th April 2008

Today saw the opening of The Gateway Gallery at London Luton Airport.

The Gateway Gallery has been delivered in partnership with the Luton Cultural Service Trust, with a view to creating exposure for local artists within the Airport arrivals area, as well as giving airport passengers greater access to local artistic talent.

The Gallery is one of 20 community projects the Airport have committed to support through 2008, as part of the Airport’s Community Engagement Strategy. The Strategy sets out the airport’s formal commitments to the community up to 2012 and focuses on three action areas, ‘A Better Environment’, ‘A Vibrant Neighbourhood’ and ‘A Growing Economy’, identifying priority programmes in each and outlining priorities for the next five years.

Janis Coles, who is a member of the Artists Network Bedfordshire, is the first artist to exhibit in the Gateway Gallery. Her exhibition work consists of photographs of flowers and plants. She likes to explore effects of light, which in nature are often transient or overlooked. These are either captured in natural light by waiting for the correct lighting conditions or she replicates these in a studio, often finding more detail using macro photography and unusual perspectives.

Simon Earles London Luton Airport’s General Manager: Planning & Corporate Social Responsibility said ‘We are delighted to give local artists the opportunity to display their work in the Airport, not only does it provide great exposure for the artist, it enhances the passenger experience. The Gateway Gallery is one of many projects we hope to support during 2008’.

Luton Carnival 2008

1st June 2008

Great British Weather Can’t Spoil Airport’s Carnival Fun

A typical British Bank Holiday downpour failed to dampen the festival spirit as London Luton Airport took part in the Luton Carnival on Monday 26th May. Employees from across the Airport worked together with pupils and teachers from St Matthew’s Primary School in Luton to join the parade of more than 70 floats in the UK’s biggest one day international spectacle.

Adopting the theme of “Destinations”, 30 school pupils dressed in brightly coloured outfits and three Airport staff members sported exotic carnival costumes depicting the Eiffel Tower, a mountain scene and a beach scene highlighted just some of the 90 plus business and leisure destinations across 4 continents accessible from London Luton Airport.

Adam Divney, Community Relations Executive at London Luton Airport said “2008 is the first year that London Luton Airport has participated in the carnival. This came about as a direct result of a staff suggestion. Those employees who took part had a great time and it was also a pleasure to work with St Matthew’s School and despite the weather, the carnival spirit prevailed and it was a great day”.

Festival of Flight

London Luton helps young people reach for the stars! ‘Festival of Flight – Ultimate Skills, Open Spirit’

On 20th June ‘Festival of Flight in Luton’ was launched at London Luton Airport by Glyn Jones, Managing Director, London Luton Airport, together with Margaret Moran, MP, Kelvin Hopkins, MP and Cllr Khtija Malik.

‘Festival of Flight – Ultimate Skills, Open Spirit’ is a photo documentary exhibition produced by the Heartstone organisation working with a range of partners. The project celebrates the thrill and passion of flight which brought together people of every background, race and culture across the world when pilots first reached for the skies. The exhibition begins with legends and stories about flying from countries around the world and ends with a feature about the advances in aircraft design and new aircraft that are being developed for aviation in the future. Festival of Flight is supported by London Luton Airport.

The project aims to give young people in Luton the chance to create the final part of the Festival of Flight exhibition. Over the course of the coming year 10 groups will use imagination and creativity to present their vision for the future of aviation through a stunning visual display. The full exhibition, that will include the contributions made by Luton’s young people, will be ready by Summer 2009.

For the young people of Luton the Festival of Flight brings another exiting opportunity as one of the team will fly a glider/trainer aircraft as part of the project. The lucky pilot will then become the local presenter for Luton’s project and take a first step into the world of flying; a pioneer for others to follow. The project looks to involve students from all backgrounds including Muslim, black and other minority and ethnic groups and hopes for interest from both boys and girls. For the girls, particularly those of Asian background, this project has a further role in challenging stereotypes and encouraging new career choices and new opportunities.

Heartstone is delighted to be working with London Luton Airport on the Festival of Flight project. The airport welcomes the opportunity to support such a fantastic and creative event to celebrate aviation and show case flying to local people of all backgrounds, races and cultures.

Glyn Jones, Managing Director, London Luton Airport commented ‘It is a great pleasure to be involved with such a unique project. London Luton Airport sits at the heart of a growing, vibrant and diverse community. Through the publication of our Community Engagement Strategy we have set out our commitment to develop our involvement with the local community and see this project as a great addition to the variety of projects already underway in 2008.”

Meet the Buyer

23rd October 2008

Suppliers vote Airport ‘Meet the Buyer’ a roaring success

London Luton Airport held its first Meet the Buyer event on 16th and 17th of October 2008, hosted in conjunction with Luton Borough Council, The Chamber, Business Link and the Federation of Small Businesses. The event was organised to give local businesses the opportunity to showcase their services to Airport companies.

Feedback from those that attended ‘Meet the Buyer’ has been overwhelmingly positive with many businesses indicating their meetings had been successful and some even concluding deals with Buyers on the spot. Over 500 appointments were held at the event between 100 suppliers and 25 airport ‘buyers’. Additionally through generous donations made by attending suppliers £10,000 was raised for the London Luton Airport Charity of the Year ‘The East Anglian Air Ambulance’.

‘Meet the Buyer’ is part of London Luton Airport and Luton Borough Council’s commitment to work closely with local business networks, the local authorities and sub-regional partners to enhance local supply chain activity. The event has shown the benefits of procuring goods and services on a more local basis, helping local businesses and employment levels, as well as potentially bringing additional environmental benefits. It has also highlighted the breadth and quality of small businesses present in Luton and the wider sub-region.

Glyn Jones, London Luton Managing Director said “London Luton Airport is committed to making a positive contribution towards the regeneration and growth of Luton and the sub-region. We believe that our success has been built, and is most sustainably maintained, on a foundation of strong relationships between the airport and its communities. We have been delighted with the reaction of the local business community to ‘Meet the Buyer’ and the positive feedback we have received from all involved. We look forward to the event generating real financial value for all parties involved.”

Luton entrepreneur, Shiraz Jessa, attended ‘Meet the Buyer’ and said ‘I came along not really sure of what to expect; I have been really impressed with the scale of the event with so many buyers from large companies based at the airport ready and eager to meet and talk with local businesses about their products and services. The meetings I have had today all present real opportunities for my business and I am confident will lead to contracts, some suppliers I spoke to even reached agreement to do business with buyers on the day!’

Phoenix Players

27th November 2008

London Luton Airport offers a lifeline to local theatre group

London Luton Airport are on standby to rescue one of Luton's oldest and best loved amateur dramatic societies, The Phoenix Players, to save them from extinction.

For the first time in 52 years The Phoenix Players have had to shelve their latest production at The Library Theatre due to lack of funds. Since rehearsals stopped for their November show they have been energetically fund raising but still have a shortfall to put on a new show in May 2009.

However, London Luton Airport has flown in with a generous donation to enable them to carry on. Maggy Brown of The Phoenix Players said ’The cost of putting on a show can be enormous and is quite often not covered by ticket sales and members' subscriptions. We are constantly fundraising but gradually we have slipped into the position where we literally had no money in the bank. It would be a shame to disband after so many years and so we are extremely grateful of London Luton Airport’s support ".

Adam Divney, Community Relations Executive, London Luton Airport said ‘We are delighted to be able to support The Phoenix Players and that our contribution makes such a difference to the group. Local groups such as these are at the heart of the community and make a positive contribution to our cultural heritage. We were very happy to help.’

Employee Volunteering

Airport Volunteers Get Stuck In

19th December 2008

London Luton Airport staff rolled up their sleeves recently and got stuck in to two local volunteering challenges as part of the Airport’s commitment to its Community Engagement Strategy.

Set up through Voluntary Action Luton (VAL), the challenges included helping local charity ‘The Next Generation’, with digging and clearing their allotment in preparation for planting.

The second volunteering challenge saw the Airport staff assisting Luton MIND in renovating the entrance to their centre including stripping wallpaper and painting the walls.

The challenges heralded the launch of the Airport’s Employee Volunteering Scheme that will see the Airport aim to complete further challenges in the local community in 2009.

London Luton Airport would like to hear from local charitable organisations that require help from volunteers in 2009.
