London Luton Airport supports Luton in Harmony Pledge
12th March 2010
London Luton Airport welcomed Cllr Hazel Simmons, Leader of Luton Borough Council, to an event launching the ‘Luton in Harmony’ pledge to Airport employees. Airport employees were invited to sign up to the scheme and wear their badge, whilst at work and in their own communities.
‘Luton in Harmony’ aims to build a positive reputation for the town by celebrating its diversity and promoting understanding within all its communities.
The badge staff have been asked to wear is ‘Luton in Harmony’s’ symbol, while the pledge that employees have signed up to says that supporters will:
• wear the Luton in Harmony badge with pride - and tell people what it means
• make friends with people from different backgrounds - and learn about their values
• and promote their own beliefs in a spirit of peace and harmony.
The aim of the programme is to invoke local civic pride and confidence, and has the potential to improve the economic, environmental and social well-being of borough residents.
Cllr Hazel Simmons, chair of the Luton Forum and leader of Luton Borough Council, said "Response to the Luton in Harmony campaign has been so fantastic that we have already had to order new supplies of the unique badge and pledge card.
"The people of Luton are demonstrating that they share our determination for the voice of the majority to be heard above that of a vocal minority, and we welcome the support of key organisations in the town such as London Luton Airport.
"We are especially keen that people arriving in Luton are made immediately welcome, and also get the opportunity to learn more about how strongly we value diversity in our town."
Glyn Jones, Managing Director said: ‘London Luton Airport sits at the heart of a diverse and vibrant local community. We have over 8000 people employed at the Airport and we are proud that our staff can act as ambassadors for this scheme and promote a positive reputation for the town. Airport staff are perfectly placed to promote the ‘Luton in Harmony’ pledge to the thousands of visitors welcomed to Luton everyday through the Airport, allowing the scheme to reach further afield.’

Charity of The Year 2010
2nd February 2010
Employees make Airport Top Fundraiser
In 2009 London Luton Airport employees pledged their support to Keech Hospice Care by choosing it as their Airport Charity of the Year. The Airport provided an initial donation of £10,000 and employees undertook a year of fundraising to increase this donation. We are delighted to report that by the end of 2009, a further £26,000 was raised by those working at the airport which has been used to support the new eight-bed Adult In-Patient Unit at Keech. The total contribution this year, together with fund raising efforts in previous years, means that London Luton Airport has donated a staggering £167,000 for the hospice since it opened as The Pasque Charity in 1991.
In 2009 Airport employees threw themselves into support of Keech Hospice Care, getting involved in marathons, triathlons, a midnight walk, quiz nights, charity collections and even cake baking. Keech Hospice Care has also benefited from the London Luton Airport employee volunteering programme with employees taking part in a number of challenges at the hospice including cleaning the hospice hydro pool, a deep clean of the new Adult In-Patient Unit prior to its opening and renovation of the courtyard garden.
David White, Chief Executive, Keech Hospice Care said ‘We are very grateful for the support we’ve received from London Luton Airport and have been really impressed by all the fundraising efforts put in by the Airport team. Not only has this helped to raise some of the essential funds we need, it has also helped to increase awareness of our work across our community. Both of these things have been a great boost for the charity. London Luton Airport has played an important part in helping us achieve this vision and I very much hope everyone there shares our sense of pride in this achievement.’
London Luton Airport employees have again selected Keech Hospice Care as the Airport Charity of the Year for 2010. A further £10,000 is pledged to the charity, with employees already planning a whole range of fundraising challenges with a view to surpassing the 2009 total.
Siân Pearce, Community Relations Executive at London Luton Airport said "This represents an incredible team effort. We’re delighted we’ve been able to make a contribution to the work of Keech Hospice Care. This is a charity which is close to many Airport employees’ hearts and we’re grateful to everybody who has rallied round in support. We’re looking forward to building on 2009’s efforts with more fundraising activities with employees and passengers alike to continue to make a real difference.”

London Luton Airport today announced £50,000 will go to the Airport’s Community Trust Fund in 2010. The fund, which was established a year ago, was set up to provide support for local community initiatives that positively contribute towards the aims and objectives of the Airport’s Community Engagement Strategy.
The £50,000 available through the fund in 2010 is open to applications from groups in Luton, Stevenage, Central Bedfordshire, North Hertfordshire, Aylesbury Vale and St Albans district - which includes Harpenden. Volunteers from London Luton Airport rolled up their sleeves and picked up their paint brushes to transform one of the children’s rooms in accident and emergency at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital, helping to brighten the room and make it more appealing for children.
The team gave the room a fresh lick of paint and decorated the walls with an array of well known cartoon characters. The work will help to make the room more inviting and comforting for young children, when they have a visit to the Hospital.
Sian Pearce, Community Relations Executive at the airport and one of the volunteers on the day, said: ‘We’re delighted to have taken part in this project. This challenge is an excellent example of the support we are able to give to community groups through our employee volunteering programme. The Luton and Dunstable Hospital is a fantastic community resource and it’s amazing to know that the work we have done will help create a more inviting environment for young patients.’
Staff sister at Luton and Dunstable Accident & Emergency said commented: “Its really bright and cheerful and a lot more welcoming for people, especially for children. We are so grateful that the staff from the Airport found the time to come and paint the room they have done a lovely job.”

London Luton Airport has launched the Flying for Success education programme in partnership with Active Luton and Luton Borough Council. The Flying for Success Programme, based on the Department for Children, Schools and Families ‘Playing for Success’ initiative, involves inviting groups of local primary school children to undertake educational visits to the Airport.
The educational visits allow the children to gain and develop essential literacy skills in an environment that is stimulating and exciting and therefore conducive to learning. Tours are themed around key areas of the airport including the terminal, international travel, fire safety and the airport environment.

New Artist Gateway Gallery
17th November 2009
London Luton Airport welcomes new artist to the Gateway Gallery
Local artist and recent University of Bedfordshire graduate Emma Barry is the latest artist to exhibit at London Luton Airport's "Gateway Gallery".
Emma says: My work explores ways in which the paint can be used and is combined with the exploration of imagery that has been sourced from popular household decoration. I class my work as being playful yet considered as each layer of the painting is planned. The juxtaposition of graphical and gestured marks creates a visual journey across the surface of the painting for each viewer to experience. Emma’s work will be open for viewing in the gallery until early January.
The Gateway Gallery has been delivered in partnership with the Luton Cultural Services Trust, with a view to creating exposure for local artists within the Airport arrivals area, as well as giving Airport passengers greater access to local artistic talent.
The Gallery is one of the many projects the Airport has committed to support as part of its Community Engagement Strategy. The Strategy sets out the Airport's formal commitments to the community up to 2012 and focuses on three action areas, 'A Better Environment', 'A Vibrant Neighbourhood' and 'A Growing Economy'.

"Lutopia"
16th October 2009
Passengers discover ‘Lutopia’ at London Luton Airport
The eye catching photography of Ben Hodson is now adorning the walls of London Luton Airport to be enjoyed by passengers and staff.
Artist & photographer, Ben Hodson has created Project “Lutopia” to look at the people and landscape of Luton and an exhibition of his work is now on permanent display at the Airport.
Hodson says: “The project looks at Luton as a whole; however, this display centres on the Airport and it’s people. I’m interested in the passing of time and photography's ability to fragment it and freeze a brief moment. When we think about time the Airport is really relevant as time is important to passengers catching flights.”
The exhibition, commissioned by the Airport is based around two collections. The first watches the transition of passengers & staff through the Airport's spaces using techniques and styles similar to that of the street photographers of the mid 20th Century. The second, in contrast, looks at the environment in which people find themselves, using large scale photo-montages. Both provide a meaningful insight into airport life.
The striking photomontages (up to 1m x 2.2m) were created by photos taken in rapid succession and show a whole scene caught in the equivalent of one second of time.
