Current Development

LLAOL published its Development Brief, setting out its vision for the next phase of development at London Luton Airport in September 2001. 'The Brief' has been formally adopted by Luton Borough Council as Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG) and has guided recent decision-making with respect to airport related development. The status of the Brief as SPG means that it is a significant material consideration in any planning application and, therefore, that proposals complying with it may be considered likely to obtain planning permission subject to their environmental effects and mitigating measures.

London Luton Airport is proud of its role as a major international gateway to the East of England. The Regional Economic Strategy recognises the importance of thriving gateways to the regional economy and supports the continued sustainable growth of London Luton Airport.

Over two million passengers a year use London Luton Airport for business travel.

We know that changes to airline routes or the launch of new destinations can have a significant effect on local businesses, including influencing the choice of business location.

We will work with our regional and local partners to develop a route network

Luton and Bedfordshire are not currently recognised as natural ‘tourism’ destinations and yet 5% of local people are employed in the visitor economy.

Research indicates that just over 5,000 new jobs in tourism could be created by 2021. As well as job creation, investment in the development of the visitor economy can brings much wider benefits to the local community.

London Luton Airport is committed to supporting the local visitor economy and will continue to collaborate with other partners to promote the local area as an attractive tourist destination.
 

London Luton Airport has shown its support for the development of tourism in Bedfordshire over the course of many years, and currently holds the Chair of the Sub Regional tourism Partnership Steering Group, tasked with promoting ‘Experience Bedfordshire’

There are over 100 companies based at London Luton Airport, each with its own complex supply chain. Procuring more goods and services locally will help local businesses and employment levels, as well as potentially bringing environmental benefits.

London Luton Airport intends to work closely with local business networks, as well as the local authorities and sub-regional partners to enhance the profile of local suppliers. London Luton Airport will also work with its business partners to understand their business needs, including current barriers to buying local.
